Verdi Otello opera to libretto by Arrigo Boito. Directed 2016 by Vincent Boussard at the Salzburg Easter Festival. Stars José Cura (Otello), Dorothea Röschmann (Desdemona), Carlos Álvarez (Iago), Benjamin Bernheim (Cassio), Christa Mayer (Emilia), Georg Zeppenfeld (Lodovico), Bror Magnus Tødenes (Roderigo), Csaba Szegedi (Montano), and Gordon Bintner (Herald). Christian Thielemann conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Sächsischer Staatsopernchor, the Salzburger Festspieleand the Theater Kienderchor. Sets by Vincent Lemaire; costumes by Christian Lacroix; lighting by Guido Levi; video designs by Isabel Robson. Directed for TV by Tiziano Mancini. Sung in Italian. Released 2017, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: NA

This has a good cast, an excellent conductor and orchestra, and slick staging, especially with Christian Lacroix  designing costumes. But Hugo Shirley, writing in the August 2017 Gramophone at pages 91-92 can't work up much enthusiasm for this rather abstract "reading that never truly gets its hands dirty with what should on occasions be a drama of earthy, visceral passion."
